Current developments – AI

The NGTV keeps a close eye on developments affecting the field of interpreting and translation. This includes the current advance of AI in our profession. We believe that the human being, i.e. the interpreter or translator, will always be central. We can regard AI as a tool to assist our work, but we need to have knowledge and understanding of it. The NGTV offers members, among other things, workshops on AI and a handbook that can serve as a tool for yourself and your clients.

To be able to inform your clients about whether or not to use AI and what all plays a role in that, you at least need to know how tools like ChatGPT etc. work. By gaining that knowledge, you and your customer can make informed decisions about AI.

Lobbying the government

The NGTV is committed to the interests of interpreters and translators. Many laws and regulations issued by the government affect our work, conditions and more. For example, through outsourcing, which makes it important to have a say in this in The Hague. NGTV does this in consultation with other stakeholders and organisations such as the ORT&V, ZZP-Nederland, FNV Zelfstandigen and PZO.

What can the NGTV do for you?

For interpreters and translators

The NGTV is involved in representing the interests of interpreters and translators in a variety of ways. This may include, for example, being represented in discussions with the government (lobbying) about tenders for interpretation and translation services by government agencies.

We regularly join other interest groups to discuss the state of affairs in the interpreting and translation world and to signal developments together.

The NGTV also organises many network meetings and workshops. These are instructive and provide an opportunity for networking. In addition, they yield PE points.

For students

Even if you are still a student and in the middle of your interpreting and translation training, the NGTV can be of service to you. For example, are you in your final year and want to get in touch with your future colleagues who are already working as interpreters or translators? Come to a meeting and get acquainted. For students, there is a special student rate, allowing you to enjoy all kinds of member benefits at a reduced price.

So you can already work on your future and build your own network while you are studying. The NGTV regularly attends schools and universities and we are closely involved with future interpreters and translators so that you have a good start when you start work.

For clients

As a client, it can sometimes be difficult to decide how to choose a suitable interpreter or translator. Or even find one. The NGTV stands for quality and integrity. Our members have signed our code of honour and their education and experience have been checked. On a special page, you can search for an interpreter or translator, sworn or unsworn, in a specific language combination or in a particular subject area.

The NGTV is keen to inform external parties about the continuing importance of humans as translators, even in an era in which AI plays a major role. We are happy to get in touch with external parties and clients if they have questions about interpreters and translators.
